MISSION STATEMENT
The purpose of the Guild is to promote and encourage interest in the art of quilting by conducting meetings, public exhibitions, educational seminars and training courses; to advocate good fellowship among members and to assist the community, using the skills of the members of the Guild.
HISTORY
In February 1994, a small group of quilters felt that the time was right for Vancouver to have its own guild. The Vancouver Quilters' Guild (VQG)
was registered as a non-profit society in June 1997. Since then the
Guild has grown and now has about 100 members.
VQG is a member of the Canadian Quilters' Association and the Association of Pacific Northwest Quilters. Each year VQG hosts the September meeting of the Northwest Quilting Connection in Vancouver .
MEETINGS
The VQG meets on the 2nd Wednesday of each month, from September to June at St. Mary's Anglican Church, 2490 West 37th Avenue (at Larch), in Vancouver. Doors open at 6 p.m. for those who want to socialize or browse the library.
The meeting begins at 7 p.m. A short business meeting with announcements is followed by "Show and Tell", which gives members an opportunity to share their work.
A programme follows, to which guest speakers are invited to share
their experience and expertise in the world of quilting. Door
prizes, a 50/50 draw, and puzzle prizes are usually included. Light
refreshments are served during a break. Meetings end about 9 p.m.
New members are always welcome (from beginner to experienced quilter). Come to a meeting as a visitor and see what we are all about. For each non-member visit a fee of $5 is
charged.
PROGRAMMES
Seven programme nights a year present interesting and informative topics for the entertainment and education of our members. Knowledgeable, skilled craftspeople and artisans from the local area and out-of-town present lectures, often accompanied by slides and trunk shows.
We also hold "Demo Nights" where experienced quilters demonstrate techniques and shortcuts that members can add to their own quilting skills.
Two programme nights per year (June and December) are reserved for social events.
QUILT SHOW
"Harvest of Quilts", the VQG's fall quilt show, is held every three years. The talents of our members are demonstrated in the wonderful
array of quilts, and their creativity displayed in response to the "Quilt Challenge". Our Quilt shows also include a Tea Room and a Vendors' mall.
NEWSLETTER
Our newsletter "Guilded Threads" is published nine
times a year for VQG members and associate members. Each issue is a forum for the Guild's many committees and activities. It includes articles of interest to quilters, announcements, quilting web sites of interest, book reviews, etc. Submissions of interest from members are always welcome, as are paid advertisements.
LIBRARY
The Guild has an excellent library of over 400 books on all aspects of quilting and related subjects. Members in good standing may borrow up to four items at each meeting, which are to be returned the next month.
Every year we acquire new books on topics of interest to quilters of all skill levels.
Periodically the Library committee organizes a sale of books.
