Our 2011 - 2012 Workshops

Saturday, 18 February 2012, 10 am to 4 pm at St Faiths

"Quilted Tesselations"

instructor Jane Cannon Intermediate level

Cost: $50 for members, $60 for non-members

Intermediate level

A tessellation is a single shape that’s repeated to cover an entire surface, with no gaps or overlaps. Simple examples include the square, equilateral triangle, tumbler, apple core, and hexagon (like you see in honeycombs and grandmother’s flower garden quilts). A complex tessellation interlocks across the surface, making it difficult to focus on both the figure and the ground at the same time. Complex tessellations are what make M. C. Escher’s drawings so mind-bending.

In this class, Jane shows you how to create your own one-of-a-kind tessellating shapes, then use them to create interesting sashiko designs, quilting designs, and appliqué shapes. A retired math professor who understands that many quilters are afraid of the G and M words, she’ll show you how fun, practical, and safe geometry can be. Even if you never liked math, you’ll love this class! You’ll go home with a couple of placemats nearly finished, and lots of ideas for jazzing up your quilts.

Saturday, 14 April 2012, 10 am to 4 pm at St Faiths

"Thread-Painted Landscapes"

instructor Carol Seely

Cost: $60 for members, $70 for non-members, kit fee $8

Experienced Free-Motion Quilter level

Learn how to use thread painting, machine embroidery, cheesecloth, confetti, cording, and needle felting to create textured bushes and trees (distant and close), whales, eagle, and sky and water effects. Your kit includes stabilizers, cheesecloth, confetti scraps, threads, and a pre-felted waterfall.

This is normally a two-day class, but Carol is compressing it into one day for us. If you’d like to make the pictured quilt, you can prepare the landscape ahead of time, and learn to add the embellished elements during the workshop. If you’d rather not do any prep work, you can use scraps to learn the techniques and take home a set of samples. Carol will fully discuss felting, cording, and thread painting, and as time allows, will demonstrate machine embroidery techniques.

Carol Seeley’s landscape quilts have been exhibited in galleries and shows throughout North America and Europe. She has won awards at Quilt Canada, the World Quilt Competition, and the Grand National Fibre Art Show.

"Two-Fabric Quilts with Needleturn Applique"

instructor Nancy Lee Chong of Pacific Rim quilt Company

Cost: $70 for members, $80 for non-members

Confident Beginner level

Find out how easy it is to make a beautiful wall hanging with Nancy’s stress-free needleturn appliqué techniques. No freezer paper, toothpicks, starch, glue, cardboard, pressing, or interfacing—just two gorgeous fabrics, a spool of thread, a needle, and a pattern you love!

Nancy will bring a variety of quilt designs for you to choose from. You’ll learn how to prepare the pattern and fabric, and how to do accurate hand appliqué with crisply turned edges.

Nancy has been teaching needleturn appliqué and Hawaiian quilting for almost thirty years. She and her sister, Janice Lee Baehr, founded the Pacific Rim Quilt Company in 1991 to promote Hawaiian quilting and distribute their distinctive appliqué patterns.
